"DEAD MAN'S SHOES" TRAILER

Dead mans shoes is a film based around two brothers, and at the beginning of the trailer you get the insinuation that it is about two brothers happy together on a journey, this changes the audiences view on the genre of the film. Camera shots are used to give an impression of a happier genre, using an establishing shot of the greener surroundings. This also tells the audience that this is set in Britain because the scenery is more familiar than other countrys. The music used is a calm guitar riff, again diverting the audience to the actual plot of the film. This is effective as it attracts the wrong audience before it attracts the right ones, therfore allowing more people to see it in cinemas.
It starts by using dialogue to explain the plot and purpose of the film, we presume one of the brothers. This is because the character talks about his life like as story, briefly giving the audience a chance to understand what they are like. Getting to know the character engages the audience as they feel more connected to him, making it more likely for them to watch it in the cinema.
Credits and intertitles are used over a black screen to highlight the words 'a brothers love', confirming what the audience assume at the beginning. These three words are effective as again it gives another indication to what the plot of the film is going to be, making the audience think it is going to be a more happier genre. This is further progressed when editing blurs the words into the next clip of two baby's, the quick look of the children before the scene changes gives an indication that it is them from their childhood. This is effective in making the audience more engaged to them and being able to get a brief understanding of who they are.
The trialer begins to change with the use of mise-en-scene to change the overall view of what is happening in the trailer, when the brothers begin to grow up. Credits and intertitles are used to change the entire plot of the story

'A brothers Vengeance'

The effectiveness of this clip is how the word Vengeance takes up the entire screen this time, and the use of fire to outline this engages the audience to a change in the plot, which interests them. It also starts to attract the audience it is meant for, the audience that prefer more action adventure. The use of this credit is effective because it stands out compared to the other titles before, which is unique to other films. This makes it a unique selling point because titles aren't used as the most effective part of a trailer to sell a film, but this film does that.
The bright fire of the titles is juxtaposed with a black and white medium shot of people that appear drunk on the screen. The effect is added by blurred effects which support the view of being drunk, as it is shown as a lost of inhabitions and to see things clearly. This adds suspense as to why they are drunk, especially because the next scene involves a man in a mask.
The man in the mask is a typical action cliche, usually used as the hero of the film, this is relevant in films such as Spider Man, Super Man and Bat Man. This is effective as it is different to most other films, as this is used in a different way to be the villian instead of the hero. It effects the audience as they want to know who this character is and what effect does he have in the film to make him important in the trailer. It also leaves the enigma of how he is related to the two brothers that are the most important role in the beginning of the film.
Clips between the two flash as if it is the genre of a horror film, which could again change the plot as there is multiple amount of clips which change to torture scenes. This is effective to the audiance as it grips them to try to understand why they are being treated in that particualr way, to try to get a reasoning. Further credits and intertitles are shown, ending the trailer for Dead Man's Shoes. This is effective with the use of music which dies down the pace at the end, urging people to come see the film in cinema's to see how they end.
What was more effective is how they advetise another unique selling point to the film, showing the title as the second to last credits instead of the last like most films are advertised. Instead they advertise the director of the film, Shane Meadows, who is well known broadly for his creation of effective films. Advertising this almost gives a guarantee to the audience that this film is worth watching, and that this would be another good reason why they should see this, along with the advertisements of recommendation that other companies such as Empire magazine has given. This is effective in bringing in a broader audience who want to keep up with current film trends, making this a must see.

Overall I think this is an effective trailer as it leaves questions that the audience want answered, and the use of different genre indicators at the beginning attracts a larger audience ranging from men and women, who stereotypically prefer the relashionship between characters. It is effective in making the audience keep with the pace as it gives indicators of a drama, leading on to action but it has all the aspects of a horror. I personally liked this and when I create my own trailer I want to use this style of different genre indicators in mine, creating tension. I will continue to research into different genre's which might be good to mix with horror, which I am thinking of using so far because of my previous test try of an animatic.

Practise animatic A2 with Jasmine Bridger

We created an animatic of a plot we could consider using as a further idea for our project, focusing on the horror genre aspect. it is effective as it gives a brief overview of shots and what music we could use to add the appropriate effect. Focusing on horror more would be effective as I have shown my ideas to be more creative, and like the idea of mixing this with another genre.

This will be a base for me to work on as ideas progress and I will later either change or develop this clip.
Doing this Practise animatic is effective as it has allowed me to understand how to create them, and when I work to create my trailer I be able to further develop it and create a better outcome.

I think the music will be our final choice as it works well with the pace of our film, stopping at the appropriate moment to add tension. This would be effective on our audience as it leaves a silence for audiences to think about once they have finished watching the trailer.

We created an error using the term credits/intertitles instead of actually including them in the trailer, however we can improve this further on when we do our final animatic idea where our ideas are more solid. We didnt include any for the time being as we do not know who is starring and what role people are playing.

Overall, it gives an effective and clear understanding of what the plot would be for our film.

Harry Potter Poster 3

Harry Potter is advertised for this poster, and we can tell this by the choice of actor on the poster, actor Daniel Radcliffe. This is the unique selling point for this poster because he is a well known actor by this point for the series, and the choice of glasses are instantly recognised. The glasses are also useful for the use of special effects used to give the poster more effect, as we can see the reflection of Dumbledore's face in the lens, another popular character of this film. These faces instantly attract the audience to view when the film is going to be released, and anticipate them for the next film. The shot type used is a close up of his face, which has been shadowed on one side with the use of lighting. This is effective as it hides him from view entirely, and signals a bad point for him in this film.
Special effects are also used for rain as the background, which leaves an enigma to the audience on where he is at this particular point, which is linked to the tagline which is placed on the poster.

'Once again I must ask too much of you, Harry'

This tagline links to the special effects on the poster as it shows he is in a dangerous situation, which attracts the audience to what exactlyis happening to put him in this situation, but it expalins Dumbledores involvement with his glasses. This tagline is effective to the audience as they are eager to find what is going to happen next in the series, since this is the sixth in the series. We can tell this by the use of the signiture font they use for the Title of the film, which has abbrieviated like Dobbys poster to let Harry's face take the most room of importance. It is placed in the corner where it is lightest so it gets the most view after the inital view of the face, these are what will get the most view. The tagline is placed underneath so it is easier to read, the font is small to give an insinuation that this is a sentence from the film before he is placed in the situation, we assume it is Dumbledore who says this sentence but we are not sure until we see the film, which adds further interest.

We know from past films that this is a fantasy genre, but this poster is effective as it doesn't reveal too much to a newer audience. Because of the brooding facial expression and the purpose that Dumbledore seems to have on his facial expression we could get the idea that this is an action, this supported by the use of tagline which makes us assume he is going to face something which he will not be able to handle. Judging by his facial expression however we get the impression he will face what is going to happen.

The colours used in this poster is what is finally used to give this poster a more effective feel to it. It is darkened so the colours don't reveal too much. The darker blue colours support the view of rain in the background, giving the idea that he is in a horrible position. They are effective in making him seem more dangerous as opposed to lighter colours which could make him appear vulnerable. The choice of darkercolours give the impression of a darkness to come, because if lighter colours were used it could give an opposite effect, confusing the audience.

Overall I think that this poster is effective as it gives a brief view on the dark emotions the character will be carrying, with the close up of his face as an act of dominance to the screen which shows determination. This is effective in making the audience want to see this film in cinema's, therefore raising sales.

The Next Karate Kid (1994) Film Trailer

This Karate Kid is next in the series of the past 3 successful Karate kid films, this being the teaser trailer. This trailer starts with a fast paced beat which continues throughout the film to make it appear more fast paced and exciting, and it includes a lot of fighting to advertise that this is an action based film.
Camera shots are used in different ways to make the fighting scenes appear more effective and dangerous, this is effective to the more female audiences who wouldn't normally see a woman in the circumstances she is in. Camera shots range is a vast quick paced way to make her appear more sinister to the audiance, and it makes them question why she wants to learn to fight, the enigma that is raised in the film.
Credits and Intertitles are used throught the clip to advertise what it is that she needs to learn in order to become a Karate champion, which is the vibe which we get when we watch the film. Putting them bold on the screen behind a black screen is effective in making the clips appear more dramatic than they should be, as the plot line isnt revealed to the audience. The fact that there is no plot line revealed in this clip wouldn't be effective to the consumer as this film is only interested in showing its unique selling point, of the name that it is a Karate Kid film. What doesn't make this as effective anymore is that the audiences of this film are now older compared to the last series which were ten years ago, and so the plot beomes sour and needs more imagination. It will also need to attract a new younger audience if it was going to be more successful.
The credits are effective however as the use of them jumping out at the screen makes them appear more dramatic if the audience went to see this at the cinema.
One shot refers to her punching a bag which then splitsm, causing a big effect with the smoke which is risen from it. This adds a cliche idea of action films as the clip was then slowed down to make the last kick appear more empowered, again attracting the female audience to feel more masculine with this particular role in the film.
The same effects are used as she jumps up onto the car, which is shown straight after the intertitle 'courage'. This is also in slow motion, which loses its effect after it has already been used. This therefore becomes more dull instead of adding interest, as it has raised another question that needs to be answered. Why had she just jumped on the car?
Dialogue is used to repeat what the intertitles had just said, and minimal conversation between characters. This confuses the audience more than anything because it is hard to understand what is happening at each particular time, and there is struggle to catch up.
The confusion is also proved more by the use of explosions in the film which had no relevance to what was just viewed on the screen for the fighting, which makes this special effect appear less intense. Again it raises a question to what had just happened and it revealed too much of the plot in the thirty seconds.

I personally don't think this clip was effective to the audience as it raised too many questions for the audience, and it was trying to reconnect with an audience which was too old now for when the film was released. Audiences of an older age want a suitable plot to make them want to watch the film.
The use of the name of the film was more important than the rest of the clip, which is why it wasn't effective. Even though its name is the unique selling point, it didn't hold anything that might spark interest for the audiences to watch.

Harry Potter Poster 2

This poster is to advertise the third Harry Potter film, the Prizoner of Azkaban. The camera shot is a medium shot of all the different characters that are involved with the film, the main character Harry being at the back. This is effective as it gives the audience distance to the main character, which allows them to see the new characters closer up. Seeing the new characters and their facial expressions makes the audience assume that they are against him, as they appear more threatening because they take over the screen. This makes the audience question as to who they are, and immediatly engages them to watch the film.
The colours used are dark black and white, except for the eyes which are bright green on the character closest to the screen. This is effective as it is eye catching and signals that this character is important to the next film. Focusing on the eyes leaves an enigma. Who is this character and how is he involved in all this? Whats his importance?
The tagline appears before the actual title, which is effective as the films name doesn't take over the screen, which would be the case for most other films being advertised. The tagline 'darkness will descend' adds tension to the film, but the character closest to the screen also goes against this tagline, as the eyes are created bright with the special effects. This could leave the question that maybe he goes against the idea of darkness, despite how he looks to the screen.
Using the title of the film at the very bottom of the screen is essential to tell new audiences what this film is, but past films were popular, making the title of the film on posters to become more unneccesary to advertisement. This allows more room for the use of characters to be introduced, but including the main character played by Daniel Radcliffe at the back helps the audience recognise the film, making him the films unique selling point.
The genre of the film is conventionalised as an action because of the use of stance portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, which is effective as it makes him appear as if he is ready for a fight against somebody. This is supported with the use of his wand at a ready stance, the use of lighting is also added to the end to make it appear lit. This allows the audience to see him better as he is the main source of light.

Overall I think this is an effective trailer as an enigma is attatched with the use of colours on the character closest eyes, making this the main aspect of the trailer. This will also engage audiences to want to watch the
film, as it is linked to the rest of the series.

Dobby Harry Potter Poster

The last Harry Potter was advertised with different posters, this one  being to advertise a character that is included in the film. The shot type that is used is a close up with his head, the light focusing on his eye. This is effective as it draws the audiences eye towards his face instead of the poster, which has been abreviated in the corner in its instantly recognisable font. This is effective as the audience recognise the font from past films, and does not need to be the main aspect of the film as the character shown, Dobby, is a well known face for the series, making him the posters unique selling point. The colours used are dark to interpret to the audience that it is the final point of the film, where the ending is the enigma to the audience, as they want to find out what is going to happen. The only light to this poster is on Dobbys facial expression, which brings across the feeling of doubt and confusion. These feelings make it more intense for the audience to want to go see the film in cinema. The other lighting comes from the credit and intertitle, which is placed in the corner. Making the font appear in the corner is effective to allow the characters face to take over the scene, but it also draws the eye away as the font is placed stragetically over the black background, making the bold colour stand out. This is effective in allowing the audience a moment to assess the facial expression before they focus on the title of the film, which the audience will already be able to know from the character.

The tagline which is included adds atmosphere to what the film will include, as it is simply 'nowhere is safe'. It is placed in small font underneath the title, and doesn't really claim as much attention as the rest of the poster. This could symbolise an unawareness of the danger coming, which is why it hardly takes place on the poster, because the audience need to find this out for themselves when watching the film.
The genre of the film isnt determined in the poster, we know this from past series which have been shown. The tension that is created in this genre could symbolise an action because of the purpose of Dobbys face on the screen, it could symbolise that he is meant to be the hero of the film. This is effective in the audience as they will want to know Dobby's real purpose for the film, and why he is so important to this poster.

Overall I think this poster is effective for the purpose of trying to sell the film that is going to be shown in cinema's, and using Dobby which is a lesser character to the three main characters (Harry, Ron, Hermoine) makes the audience interested in finding out what makes him important for the film.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

http://www.filmeducation.org/teachingtrailers/secondary/make_a_trailer/view/8877C

District 9 - trailer

District 9 is a film about aliens wanting to return to their planet, it is an effective trailer as it seems at the beginning as if it is a documentory, which hooks the audience in.
It starts off as if it is a documentory by calm music in the background which is overshadowed by a womans voice. The use of a mid shot with this clip makes it appear more like a documentory as there is no special effects changing the way the trailer appearance will look.
The main use of effects is the mid shot of a van where there is a soldier juxtaposed with the first foreign woman saying 'there is more security.' This is effective to the audience as it leaves an enigma which makes them ask what it is they are being protected from. The use of editing shows each clip to a fast pace from one blurred out to another. This could emphasise the urgency of what it is they are being protected from, therefore makes the audience hooked before they find out the true genre of the film, a sci-fi action film.
At this point the audience still think that this trailer is a documentory, as the camera shots change rapidly from an establishing shot to another mid shot of a woman sitting in an office room. She talks about the government, which is effective to the audience as a more realistic viewpoint of what could be happening today.
The use of credits and intertitles are used to express the main idea of what the film is about, flashing on a black screen in small lettering first of all 'They are not welcome.' The last word is always changed to show whatever is happening isn't supposed to be there, again anticipating the audience to what it is that they dislike. Using a black screen to show these words further emphasises how strongly there are meant to be feeling about this problem, which adds tension.
The belief of this trailer being a documentory continues as the use of camera work has different shots of different people expressing their feelings about a situation we don't know about. This engages the audience as they want to know what it is they are talking about, and to make their own viewpoint.
The seriousness of the sitaution grows when a woman who appears at the beginning of the trailer says that everyone is 'living in fear'. This is juxtaposed to a van full of men in army uniform. The idea of sci-fi for the genre isn't even considered, and the way the trailer has been made it adds even more tension as the audience don't realise their watching a trailer, therefore it demands the audiences attention.
The last intertile is how they find out the genre of the film, as the word 'Human' appears after they are not which adds continuity to the trailer. This is when the audience know the trailer is not a documentory.
The use of the spacecraft has caught the audiences eye by now even though they know it is a trailer, which adds further sales in cinema's. It is at a slow pace which adds tension and makes the audience eager to know what it is they are going to see, with the idea that is will be scary.
The alien is seen by an over the shoulder shot of a conversation between him and the man. Words appear at the botton as subtitles to interpret the aliens language. This is effective to the audience as they have to watch the screen to see how the alien reacts to conversation each time.
The audience want to see this in the cinema after watching this trailer because they conversation sees the aliens as the beings that the audience want to side with, as they are only after peace. This makes us hate the humans in conversation with them as they are trying to get home. Not revealing the alien until the end is effective in making them seem more mysterious.

Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 Official Trailer

This trailer is of the series link to Twilight, this being Breaking Dawn Part 2, the last of all the films. This already attracts a large target audience because it is from the popular book series. The last films were popular to audiences and this is the trailer that excites them for the ending.
The unique selling point of this film is the choice of actors which are now more popular because of the string of latest films from the series, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. This is effective in attracting the audiences who prefer to see the more familiar faces in the media, and attracting the main audiences to achieve higher sales.
The trailer starts with an establishing shot of forests which was used in the trailers for the last films, showing a continuity that is needed. It is also effective in keeping the audience guessing what the film is, as the characters havent been seen to give the plot away. The use of camera shots is effective when one of the characters is seen over the their shoulder quickly, making the audience eager to see who it is. The plot is immediatly given away of the vampire genre as the scene of fast paced people are all over the screen, showing the idea of vampires according to the book. Special effects are used on the close up next of an eye, which is used to show the redness which is in them to establish the thirst of a vampire. This is the unique selling point to audiences, making them want to see more. This small second part of the trailer helps the audience get an understanding for the next in the series, making them want to see more.
Special effects are used to merge the forest into arms of the characters Ewdward Cullen and Isabella Swan, the intimate moment tells the audience of the romantic genre of the film, whereas the first 15 seconds related to the action genre connected. This is effective in showing the narrative of the film as its use of one clip to another shows how more action is going to continue throughout the film, therefore establishing something to watch and how the ending is going to happen.
The dialogue between characters helps the audience feel more connected to the characters from past films, and it also gives a few brief seconds of another actor which the target audience of teenage girls are interested in, Taylor Lautner. Using this actor attracts the younger audiences to want to go see them in the cinema.
The music changes as the pace increases of the danger that the characters that we associate with are in. We immediatly despise the character that we see as evil compared to the others, and the louder tempo of the music engages the audience to the action part of the film.
The use of mise-en-scene with hooded figures gives the audience information of immediate danger, as we associate hoods with people who cause trouble. The vast amount shows a larger chance of them winning the battle, even though in a romance the people we like and relate to always win the battle.
Credits and Intertitles are used to give the audience information on the date with which the film is released, the dark clouds as a background adds effect to the romantic style of font. It also rises the chance of people seeing the film in cinemas.
This trailer is effective in the final seconds advertising the title of the film in the same point, this also adds effect as it reaches the peak of the music, before slowly becoming silent. This music alone adds effect because it acts as a way of the audience edging more to want to see the film in cinemas.

Prezi - analysis of two trailers

I created a Prezi with Jasmine Bridger, analysing the similarities and differences between two trailers that are advertising films of similar plot lines, but in different context.
The films are Scary Movie (horror/comedy) and Woman in Black (horror).
