THE 13TH KILLING

Make up tutorials for our killer

Because our killer is centered around the use of the knife, we decided to look at make-up tutorials of how we could make slash marks on our killers face to make him appear scary to the audiences. We have looked at a variety of different killers and have found that some of the more popular killers wear normal clothes but have a distorted face, which is why we have decided to look further at chnaging our actor matt creasey's facial expression. We have found one Youttube video of make a slash mark by the mouth which seems effective, we could usemultiple amounts of these marks all over his face with the fake blood included.

This website includes many examples of make-up examples for what we can do for our final killers face.

Other Props Needed - Choice of knife.

A knife is the weapon that we chose to use for our killer because it appears most threatening and is a cliched horror weapon. The fake blood research that we have already looked into canbe smeared onto the knife to create the illusion that he has already killed. We got the idea from Michael Myers, a horror character that is similar to how we are making our killer and uses the same weapon in a threatening way.

There are different types of knives that we could use:

This knife has a more decorative handle than normal knives. This would only be effective if the knife was prominantly shown in our trailer which it will be, but it also seems more old fashioned. Being old fashioned wouldn't work because out trailer is meant to insinuate the modern day killer, and the use of this mise-en-scene doesn't show this continuity.
This knife seems more modern day which would be more effective for our trailer. It has a pattern on the handle that doesn't appear to be from an older generation. This could be once of the considerations for our killer.
The butterfly knife is effective because there could be some clever effects when it comes to the strobing that we were considering to use for our trailer, instead of slicing down it could be the killer opening the knife out. This is another consideration for our killer, as it also appears more modern day, and it changes our killer from Michael Myers.

Prop - Fake Blood How To

Fake blood
How to make a splatter gun
You will Need:
Soy Sauce
Food Colouring
Plastic Tubing
Plastic Syringe
Push Pin

Making the splatter gun:
Step 1: Take a piece of small plastic tubing about the size of a vein or an artery, and force it onto the end of a syringe. Use tape or glue to make this into an airtight seal.
Step 2: Make the blood. Pour some soy sauce into a cup or bowl and add the red food dye. Add enough to make the blood dark red.
Step 3: Load the syringe. Put the end of the tubing in the cup or bowl and pull back the plunge to suck up the blood.
Step 4: Stop the end. Use a push pin to clog the end of the tube. Make sure it's well clogged.
Step 5: Prep yourself. Tape the loaded syringe under your costume and push on the plunger to release a spray of blood.

History of Horror Films

"If movies are the dreams of the mass culture... horror movies are the nightmares"
— Stephen King, Danse Macabre

Horror Films: The history behind them

Horror is known as an ancient art form. They orginate from tales which trigger the less logical parts of our imaginations for as long as we have told the stories for generations. These can be from the ballads of the ancient world to the now modern urban myths, audiences willingly offer themselves to storytellers to be scared, in films it is about getting a physchological thrill from the experience of being scared knowing conciously that you cannot get hurt. It is said that the reason why we watch horror films is to trigger the rush of adrenaline which fear brings, but horror films also serve a wider moral purpose, to reinforce the rules and taboos of our society.

Horror movies have long served two purposes. They are known to deliver thrills as well as tell the dark, forbidden side of life and death. These are known as cautionary tales for grown ups which are meant to show a mirror image of peoples anxieties. When watching you feel as if you are overcoming your fears which adds a thrill of exitement which is addicting.

An example of a horror film that is known for following the genre is Nosferatu (1922). It is not considered a tale of vampirism although it has this involved.
The plot involves Vampire Count Orlok expressing interest in a new residence that is unknown and real estate agent Hutter's wife. It is a silent classic based on the story "Dracula." which is a known horror book of the time.

The character in this film consists of a killer who is dressed in a big coat and has the facial expressions to chnage the way he appears to audiences. This is effective because it makes the audiences question why he looks the way he does, but automatically you are made to dislike him because of the aesthetics of his facial deformities.

Each generation gets different films in the horror genre, and one of the more fascinating aspects of the study of the genre is the changing nature of the monsters who present a threat. In the 1940s, part-man, part-wolf as becomes the boogeyman, whose natural part of his mind sees himself as the beast tears apart those who crosses his path.

In the 1990s however, there was no need for a part wolf component: Hannibal Lecter was entirely human but his face was distorted to change him into being the killer. This was effective because it showed a new use of make-up emerging that hadn't been used before, and changed the way in which we make horror films today.

Twisted Pictures - Why we chose this institution

Twisted Pictures is an Institution that has created all the Saw films, which makes it popular and has gained financial profit. As you can tell with the use of text and imagery, Twisted Pictures is only associated with horror films, which is why it is perfect for our trailer.
To have this Institution at the beginning of our trailer allows the audience to already gain an understanding of what genre our film is, and it will intrigue them to how the scenes digress to a typical horror trailer.

This is the video of the opening of the Institutions opening, and it is effective because of its link to the horror genre. This runs for 11 seconds, and seeing how this is a trailer we have had to consider the timing. This is why we have decided to cut it down so that the trailer finishes 5 seconds in, this is when the dagger comes slashing down onto the screen. The sound effects won't be added until after the Institution, this is because it is very atmosheric for the genre and will leave a silence at the end for the music to start slowly.
We like this Institution as well because of the visual aesthetics of how it is presented to screens, it is effective because it stands out to audiances because of its effects. We likes the noises that were made by metal grating which wound around the title in bold, the same as what our trailer title will have.

It will make our trailer stand out as an effective horror film because the Institution is known worldwide for the horror/thriller genre.

Location Shots

We have taken shots of the locations we are going to be filming on the 16th December for our trailer. We have done this along with our Animatics to get a more visual idea of what it will look like.

We are going to film some clips down the street of jasmine's house and inside, like this view on Google maps. This would be the party clips near the beginning of the trailer.

The Park - This is where some shots will be taken with our main character to make it appear as if the killer and one of the female leads are romantically involved. This is one of the changes we have made in shots to our Anamatic to change the idea of the genre of film to the audience.

The woods - Oxshott woods is the main place where we will be filming, this is because it is a cliched areas for horror films. There will be plenty of running shots and of panicked people screaming as the killer is set loose. The change of time in December is darker so it will be more atmospheric.

Film Treatment for the 13th Killing

Beginning- The beginning of our film would be introducing the characters that we are including in our trailer, this is before the killer is known to the audience and the characters. Our first scene would be similar to a newspaper article, adverstising someone dying at a party a few weeks ago. This would be something that the characters wouldn't see, only the audience are privy to the information. This could then lead on to the characters in our trailer having their party, the audience knowing that she will eventually die. She could be having an argument with her friends about whether they should go to the party or not, saying something cliched like 'nothing is going to happen'! A party would then happen that would take us to the middle of the film.

Middle - The party has certain events between the characters that trigger the eventual death of many of the characters, including the girl, of which our trailer shows of her being dragged away. The killer is merged in with the crowd, almost stalking the next victim. He hears a conversation about another party between the girls that they are going to, and chooses that place to strike. During the party he sees one our male extra's talking to the girls - flirting? This annoys the killer which results in him trying to get rid of his competition by killing off the other males. Bekky's character Rosie would be the person that the killer is obsessed with because of her flirtatious attitude. The killer tries to make her paranoid by causing near death experiences, knowing that her friends will think shes doing it for attention, causing her to be isolated which the killer takes to his advantage.
Shelly's character Donny could take Bekky's side because she already is isolated which is why the killer never pays any attention to her like the other girls in the film. Although Donny is taking Rosie's side, near death experiences will still occur over the anger of Rosie not being completely on her own, which is how the killer will meet Donny, without any romantic interest.
Cut between the near death experiences with Donny and Rosie, the male extra's are being killed one by one. The killer uses a romantic interest that Jack has towards Rosie to his advantage, playing with his emotions. Due to Rosie being intrgued by Jack as well, this is how the killer lures her to the next party.

End - The party takes place that is in our trailer. You see the remaining alive characters, including Donny and Rosie having a good time, not knowing that more deaths are to come and that deaths have already taken place. You see the killer walking behind the girls, but also behind his next male victim who is going to the party. The party consists of Donny sitting alone, watching Rosie. This is at the same time as Jack walks into the party (with a beer) also looking at Rosie enter. They all dance, certain clips are of the killer preparing for Rosie's death. This is when Rosie says 'I'll be back in a minute'. We have changed this to Jack replying in a Joking way 'No you won't.' .
Rosie walks outside of the party, only to find the killer waiting for her, with the knife in his hand. She could think that it could be all a joke because of the near death experiences, until he strikes. She screams, but no one hears her because of the music.
Donny would be outside going to look for Rosie until she sees the hands being dragged away. She hears the scream. She would go investigate and hides behind a wall, recognising the killers face from previous partys and links him to the near death experiences. Saying a prayer to Rosie, she knows she has to catch the killer before he kills again. She does this by striking the killer on the back of the head with a pole, this would be the 13th person killed, linking to the Title.
The films ends on how it began, with the news article of deaths of being linked to parties, the killers face is revealed on the article this time as well now that he is dead and the plot has been revealed.

Finalised Costume - Male characters

Costumes for killer and extra's
- We have decided that the killer will be the one dressed in trousers as we want to make him different, this also represents comfort which juxtaposes his personality.
- The two extra's will be dressed in casual wear consisting of shorts and a t-shirt with a jacket as males steretypically don't make an effort compared to females.

Finalised Costume Research - Female Characters

costume for Rosie
- We have chosen this outfit because it represents her character's personality and conforms to a stereotypical outfit that a teenage female would wear to a party.
Costume for Donny
- We have chosen this outfit as the character is shy and reclusive, which is why we feel that she covers herself up with leggings and long tops so that she does not expose herself unlike Rosie.
Costume for extra
- we have chosen this outfit as although she is an extra the character still has to represent a teenage girl going to a party.

Actors Finalised - Male Characters

Main Character: Killer

Matt

Matt studies drama for A level and also does an after school drama club with Bekky, our female lead. They have worked together before which will be beneficial because they will understand how they each act on screen and thereofre can work to each others strengths. Matt has played the killer character before, which will also be beneficial for this part as he can use past experience to adapt to this role.

Extra's:

Alistair

Jack (picture to come)

Both have agreed to be extra's in the trailer because it gives it a more realistic feel that this is a house party, and it will set the mood of a lighthearted party we are trying to create. We will dress them both so they conform to teenage dress. Alistair and Jack have both been extra's for small parts before, Alistair being in Jasmine's opening two minutes last year. This will be helpful for us because it means that we already have a connection with the actors that will enable us to work better together when filming.

Actors Finalised - Female Characters

Main Charater: Rosie

Bekky

Bekky studies drama at college which makes her the perfect candidate for the character that gets killed. She is a big horror film fan and is interested in being an actress when she is older, which is why we have included her as the main character.

Donny: Shelly

Shelly

Shelly doesn't do drama, however she is interested in horror films and has the same personality of being shy like the character. She is also accessible during the times we are going to film. She is good at hair and make-up, and is willing to help with the preperation.

 Extra Character: Jasmine

Jasmine

Being one of the directors of the trailer, Jasmine had to be someone who didn't have as much of a part in the trailer, but gives it a more realistic feel that it is a party. Jasmine is a good choice however to have in the trailer because she studies drama for A Level, therefore understands how to act in situations where you are not the main character in scenes.

Possible actors for killer - Male Lead

Possible actors for the killer:
- You only see this character's face right at the end
Matt Jack - picture to come
possible actors for the extra:
