Costume Research - Killer

The killer is important to dress because we want to give the idea to the audience that this is the person to be feared without revealing too much that they seem out of place in the party scenario. We have researched into costumes that may work and can be created ourselves:

Freddy Krueger

Freddy Krueger is a good inspirational idea because it resolves around the make up for the face that changes him from other characters in a scene. The costume he wears however is just a jumper and a hat, which can easily blend in to the party environment. We could use this idea by dressing the killer in a hoodie or a jumper as well with a hood that covers the characters face when being filmed. This will then leave the audience wondering who the killer is until focused on.

The Scream

The costume for the scream can be used without the mask, more as a long coat. It would be changed by making it more everyday, this would be effective because the hood covers the face that would be manipulated with make-up. This way the killer can blend themselves in with the audience more easily and could even be included in the background of certain shots before being revealed that it is the killer in the background. This would be a greater effect for the audience when as they want to know more about this killer.

Michael Myers

This character from Halloween Series is a good character to look into because he includes the knife prop that we use and he is dressed more normally than the other killers researched. This is the killer that we can take inspiration from because in this clip he is shown in a normal environment like what we are trying to put our killer in. His costume is stained with blood, which is what we should be including for our killers costume so it appears more realistic. The face is distorted with make-up as well just like we wanted to create for our killer, but with knife slashes.

Hannibal Lecter

Hannibal lecter has a normal face only changed by the mask, which is easier to create and can be filmed more easily. The characters costume consists of just a blood soaked white shirt, which would agin be easy to take inspiration from and is cheap to create for our killer. This limits our use of make-up for the face but it would still be effective for our character.

We think that the character we should be looking at more is character of Micheal Myers, as it is similar to the killer that we are trying to create. The use of costume, make-up, and environment is similar which is why he has become more inspirational.

Costume Research - Teenagers

Because our trailer revolves around a normal teenage party setting, the costumes are going to be more low key - including the killer. The killer would stand out by the use of make up that would distort the facial expression, leaving the costume more ordinary so that they would blend in to the party setting. The costumes are going to be typical teenage clothing, researched below:

teenage girls fashion tends to be short dresses with bare legs on show, this is a consideration for the actors in our trailer who are going to be the party goers, and the main character in our trailer who gets killed, she is the one who is supposed to be the flirtatious character. Straight hair and perfect makeup, this will need to be how our character is dressed to get the appropriate idea of what a teenager should be like.

Bright Tights and High Heels

Bright tights seems to be a statement for 2012 fashion for party's if they decided not to have bare legs, which would be mixed with a plain dress. Females would be the most important to dress as they would be more interested in the way they look. To make this trailer effective the characters perceptions of themselves need to be considered, as we want the audience to beleive that this is set at a party.

Shorts and shirts would be more likely for a house party which is where the trailer will be filmed. This will also be more achievable because our filming involves the use of fake blood which may stain the clothing more, this way it will be cheaper.
Male fashion is more jeans and tops to match, which is how our killer could be dressed to hide into the background. This image is interesting because of the use of contacts for the eyes that appears to make him more scary because it only includes the pupils. This is influenctial when thinking of the killers facial aesthetics using make-up, this is one of the ideas that we could consider.

To the right is a number of examples of teenage fashion that the men could wear in our trailer. From this we can see that they wear jeans and brightly coloured shirts and hoodies on top, normal clothing which will make the atmosphere seem realistic when filming.

Poster Layout

We have looked into posters as part of our resarch because we will be taking pictures whilst our actors are still in costume on the same day as the filming. This will be effective as the scene will still be in place, and it saves time for our actors to get into costume again. We have analysed every aspect of what we will need to include in our poster to make it realistic to audiences. This will be helpful later on as we can use these as inspiration for our poster once our trailer is created.

Soundtrack Research

We have looked into five different music on the Website 'FreeplayMusic' to find choices that could be potentially be the soundtrack for our trailer. We have briefly described why these would be appropriate and whether where we would consider using them. They are all horror sountracks that we could use. Our preferences were Running Away which we have used in our Animatic. We are considering using this with another soundtrack because the track lasts for one minute and our trailer lasts longer, also we want to give our trailer more atmosphere with a different pace of soundtrack.

THEM - Official Trailer

Them is a movie about two people called Lucas and Clementine who live peacefully in an isolated country house. They wake up to a strange noise one night to find a group of hooded assailants begin to terrosrize them through the night. It was made in 2006, and is a Horror/ Thriller movie. The trailer effectively shows the plot of this film by:
  • Sound - The first sound that you hear in this trailer is the telephone ringing. This immediatly leaves the audience questioning who is on the other side of the phone, and is it going to effect the way the plot turns. Using this sound to open up the film indicates to the viewer that this will be the killer on the other side of the line, and that this starts how they are going to die. The woman on the phone seems confused by the person on the other line, which immediatly draws the attention of the viewer as they will want to know what is being said.
  • Intertitles - Straight after these two clips of the woman on the phone leads to thean intertile that shows the selection of film festivals that it has been selected for. This attracts audiences as it signals that this is a film that you are meant to go and see because of the mass popularity it already has. By doing this at the beginning of the trailer it attracts a larger fan base of audiences besides horror because of the different festivals it has been nominated for.
  • Voiceover Narrative - The male voiceover given is a genre indicator of a horror, as it is spoken slowly and with effect to what is happening on screen.  The dialogue given with this is to add effect to the action that we see on screen, and it alerts the audience to be more observing to the situation the characters have been placed in.

'In the still of the night, we see things ..... we hear things .... that aren't always there ... but tonight. Your imagination isn't playing tricks. And neither are they.'

This is effective with the action because we only see a vulnerable woman alone in certain areas that are typically associated with horror films, such as big uninhabited buildings and the woods. These are usually the chosen places for horror because they are quiet and have a large area of ground for which the killer could be hidden in, which takes audiences out of their comfort zone.
  • Signalling to the audience with another intertitle that the film they are watching is based on true events further adds tension because it becomes more realistic to them and they become eager to find out the plot of the story. The audience also want to connect more to the characters because of the realness of the situation and plot. It is effective for it to be included after the dialogue because this was the genre indicator that the audiance needed to know before it was revealed that the plot is true.
  • The pace - The pace starts to become more fast and energetic because of the realisation to the audience of the choice of genre. It adds effect as the realisation that the plot is based on true events is revealed in the intertitles. The pace builds up to signal to the audience that the killer is about to emerge, and this is where it becomes more interesting to the audience as they want to know what the killer looks like.
  • A shodow of the killer is placed coming down the stairs towards the audience. Although it is a mid shot is is placed to the side of the stirs, so each step down the killer takes gets closer to the screen. It is appealing to audiences interested in horror because of the lack of information about the killer, and the use of shadowing makes him more interesting and leaves an enigma that makes us question what he looks like.
  • The big flash that highlights the terror from the womans face is the indicator that the killer has arrived. The noise had started to die down but at this precise moment it picks up noise again loudly to alert the audience of danger. This is when the pace flashes images of the characters in different situations, assuming hiding in case of death.

'Try to Run From Them.'

  • This is effective because of the link between the films name and the intertitle caption that is shown. It is effective because you never get to find out the killers true name, which we want to know. We also want to see what the killer looks like as a result because this is who the film is based around. Near the end of the trailer you still don't get to see his face, but the mise-en-scene used is the choice of a hood as a costume covering the killers face. This is effective because it supports the stereotype that has been created of finding a hooded figure scary. We find this scary because of the link with death that we associate with hoods.
  • The end of the trailer is signalled by an echoing scream. We have done this for our trailer, so this conforms with the cliched stereotype ending that we have done. It is effective for horror films because it leaves us questioning what has happened, and did she get killed? It also supports the view of the killer being something to fear.
  • The voiceover dialougue comes back the last time to just say the name of the film. This is effective because of the bluntness of it, no words are expressed to show any signs of emotion. This leaves the audience on edge but because of the lack of information about the killer, the audience still finds themselves wanting to go and see the film.
