Paul is a Sci-Fi Comedy based around an Alien which is trying to make his way home, so he enlists the help of two lone science fiction comic writers to take him away so he can escape. It attracts the audiences by the fast pace that the trailer makes it seem, using special effects to make the car crashes seem larger in impact therefore attracting the audinces of more action exitement.
In this teaser trailer, the comedy is created by showing particular clips of the film with a song that makes them appear happy and reinforces a false view of how the genre and plot of the film will play out. The use of music makes this more funny because it is then ubruptly stopped with sound effects which then reveal the true storyline to the film. This makes the audience eager to see the film when it is released because now the true plot has been revealed to be more action based and more exiteable.
This trailer attracts the audiences by its use of credits and intertitles, which again gives a false view of the storylines plot until Paul is introduced. The Intertitles are used in a bold white font over a black screen so the audiences focuse on that particular piece of information, and this is the only information needed for the audience to interpret the story.
The music used adds humour as the lyrics insinuate just the two people on a trip which is being disturbed by Paul's presence, and the use of editing with special effects makes this character seem more interesting by his aesthetics as an alien. Paul is introduced effectively in the narrative as he doesn't appear straight away in the trailer, it enables the audience to wait to see Paul and be introduced to him from the viewpoint of the two other characters.
The pace of the trailer changes as it progresses, since the beginning is a sarcastic showing of what the film is going to be like. When the true storyline is introduced the pace quickens with effective shot angles and special effects to show explosions. This engages audiences who prefer more action based films and it further intriques them for the film to be released.
The camera shots range from extreme close ups of characters faces to see their facial expressions to low angle shots so the action seems more huge to the audience in its impact. This is effective as it further makes the audiences question why this explosion takes place in the film and what is the explanation for the alien to be in this film, which attracts them to watch it.
The Unique selling point is the use of the characters and how they are comic book nerds with an alien on the road, it has a different plot to most films where the alien is considered a feared being which cannot talk and has a glow surrounding. This film attracts audiences because it goes against the cliche of aliens, and instead refers to him being more regular than the two other characters on the trip, acting more typically American. This attracts the target audiences which would be teenagers of 15 and onwards because of the mix of action and comedy based around sci-fi, the mix is extrordinary for most films to follow which again makes it unique.
The narrative is effective as it shows glimpes of the journey to the destination Paul wants to go to without revealing anything, which engages the audience to see in cinema's when it is released. Voiceovers aren't used except for snippets of conversation in the films that are the comedy parts of the film, this attracts the audiences to the humour and how the alien is mixed in to this plot.
In all I think it is a very effective film trailer as it engages in all the ways that a film should to give an explanation of the genre.
